Initial Lesson

All of the riding classes begin with an initial evaluation appointment to assess what level is appropriate and to give more time for teaching the very beginning stages.

**At the instructor’s discretion, a semi-private lesson might be considered for no more than 2 riders at the same level (eg: sibling groups) for a slight discount of $35 per student.

This is the testing lesson, which is longer than an hour. This will be a scheduled event involving all the students wishing to get their badges or move up to the next level. It will include both mounted and unmounted work, and include lunch or dinner and badge or medal award.

This is a celebration, and students are encouraged to invite friends and family to attend!

Prepare for your mounted lesson

What to wear: Long pants, closed toed boots or shoes with a heel. Safe footwear is important to prevent your foot from slipping through the stirrup. We have helmets for you to use until you decide to purchase your own. Helmets must be ASTM certified horseback riding helmets; other sports helmets such as bike helmets don’t provide the right sort of protection. Students will want to be sure to dress in layers appropriate for weather conditions. Avoid overly bulky jackets, mittens, or slippery gloves. Season-appropriate extras like sunscreen, bug spray, or hand/toe warmers are good to have on hand as well. Students taking horse care lessons involved in cleaning stalls and other barn chores like stacking hay will want to have muck boots or similar (like rain boots) and leather work gloves.

Please see the “FORMS” page of this website. You must complete the Liability Release and info form and read the barn rules prior to having your first lesson. Please bring the completed form with you.

Students are welcomed and encouraged to observe others’ lessons. It’s a good way to gain more exposure and input without having to pay extra money ;) Please be courteous when watching, and ask permission before taking or posting any photos or videos of someone else. Time spent hanging out at the barn is a good way to build community, as well as your store of knowledge and “horse sense”. So much can be gained simply through observation. That being said, be sure to plan your visits when there are lessons going on, since this is a private home as well.

Ages accepted from age 7 and up. The student must have the physical ability to handle and ride a horse. This means being able to stand and walk independently, stand on one foot, move quickly out of the way in case of a sudden movement by the horse, have good balance both while on the ground and while mounted, be able to hear and understand verbal instructions by the instructor, be able to see well enough to guide the horse, and have the fitness to stand in the stirrups and mount as well as lift a saddle.

Horseback riding is a physical activity requiring a moderate level of fitness at the minimum. An obese or unfit rider will be harder for the horse to carry and effectively balance, as well as have difficulty balancing themselves in the saddle. Every effort will be made to accommodate unfit riders in unmounted activities, but be aware that fitness level may impact your ability to participate in mounted lessons.

Note: at this time, we are unable to accomodate riders over 230 lbs for mounted lessons. If you wish to participate over that weight limit, we are happy to teach you all about horses in unmounted lessons. There is so much more to horses than riding.

For any minor students, per Safe Sport recommendations, a parent or guardian must remain present on the property. Other children are welcome to come as well to either observe or hang out in the building next to the arena. There is wifi, water, snacks, and a library available in this heated and air conditioned space, as well as plenty of seating and a window that looks out onto the arena. Outdoor seating also available.

Inclement Weather Policy

At this time, Hiddenview Farm doesn’t have an indoor arena. In case of rain, snow, or extreme heat or cold, students have the option of either postponing or having an unmounted lesson. If the farm closes due to inclement weather or for snow removal, etc. you will be notified by text, messenger, email, or phone as soon as possible.

Cancellation Policy

We understand emergencies happen, but we do request the courtesy of a 24 hour notice for any cancellations. In the event of a same day cancel/reschedule or no show you may be charged the horseless unmounted lesson fee of $30 for the forfeited time slot. This amount will be collected with the payment for the next lesson.

COVID-19 Policy

In accordance with CDC and government recommendations, we are requiring masks be worn by anyone age 5 and up when in the buildings if you have any cold or flu-like synptoms. When outside, having or observing a lesson, masks are not required as long as 6’ distance can be maintained. Thank you for your understanding!
